In the land of the Nipigon

Autumn Woods and Waters Photography Workshop

Québec Lodge September 18-21, 2014

The land of the Nipigon
Nipigon is synonymous with rugged beauty. In the land of the Nipigon the Canadian Shield asserts itself as towering flat-topped mesas of sedimentary rock towering 500 feet or more above the talus-littered forest floor. Deep, shaded canyons hold micro climates where Arctic plants left from the last ice age still grow. Flowing water free fall over the cusps of sheer rock faces and a vast network of hiking trails lead to jaw-dropping lookouts over the waters of Lakes Superior and Nipigon.

Throw in cedar-rimmed inland lakes cradled within this angular landscape and wild rivers cascading over the Canadian Shield and the Land of the Nipigon has all the raw materials for stunning photography.

Nipigon River Adventure’s Québec Lodge, a sprawling horizontal log structure dating back to 1937, is in itself photo worthy. Located between the towns of Nipigon and Red Rock along the Nipigon River, the warm embrace of Québec Lodge is central to area attractions like Ouimet Canyon, Eagle Canyon Adventures, Pijiwatabik Palisades and a stone’s throw from the Nipigon River Recreational trailhead, with its unparalleled lookout over Lake Superior.

As the September landscape is transformed into a tapestry of golds, browns and vibrant yellows, it’s a great time to unearth the gems of the Nipigon region. From mountaintop vistas to the tiniest details of the lichen, moss and mushrooms of the forest floor, the precipitous boreal landscape of the Nipigon area provides sustenance for photographic growth.

One-On-One
Within this rich and varied landscape photographers will experience a mix of formal instruction in the lodge combined with hands on, one-on-one instruction in the field. Professional photographer James Smedley will explore the foundations of photography - shutter speed, aperture, composition and light - to capture moments and mementos from this singularly beautiful region along with insights into the challenges and rewards of outdoor photography. There will be instruction for those just learning to use their cameras as well as for accomplished shooters who want to explore their photographic horizons.
